A Bernedoodle Stud to Remember; Mr. Remington AKA “Remi”
When people want to get a Bernedoodle, one of the main enticing traits is their unique tendency to be both relaxed and goofy at the same time. They can be both people lovers and warm solitary souls all I the same breath, and a lot of people find this very endearing (including me).
This is also a fitting description of our Bernedoodle stud, Remington - who also goes by Remi. Here at High Desert Family Doodles, we are excited for Remi to be a cornerstone in our Bernedoodle lines and would love to introduce him along his uniquely and lovably eccentric profile and personality.
Much like our other dogs, we didn’t go with Remi because he was geographically close and easy, but because he was right fit for our breeding program and came from a reputable breeder whom we work with and trust. Remi joined us in Oregon last spring, from a fellow Bernedoodle breeder in Colorado who is also a GANA-certified breeder. This helps us know that his parents got properly health-screened in order to help the Bernedoodle puppies be the healthiest they can be.
Humble Bernedoodle Stud Beginnings
Remi was one of only two puppies in his litter, making it a higher risk pregnancy. This is because fewer puppies means that there is more space in the womb for them to go, increasing the need for a C-section. Remi’s mother did need to get a C-section, and his sibling ended up passing in the process.
While Remi didn’t have any other littermates that survived, the breeders did a great job at socializing him across the spectrum: adults, kids, other dogs and puppies. In the weeks leading up to us picking him up, we were especially impressed by his “manding” skills (meaning that he would sit to say please).
While some late season Colorado weather delayed his Oregon arrival trip, Remi did a great job transitioning to Oregon from Colorado. He immediately cozied up to us and our family, melting hearts along the way. With somewhat heavy hearts - only half joking - we delivered Remi to his guardian home, who is our neighbor, and he melted hearts there as well. The guardians also have a Goldendoodle, and Remi and her became quick friends.
It’s been a lot of fun to see Remi’s friendship with Millie the Goldendoodle blossom as well! Plus he’s still close enough for us to get some fun play time too. Plus, he’ll occasionally come over to our house to get groomed, since we’re an hour away from the nearest groomer.
The Traits of Remi the Bernedoodle Stud
Remi is an F1 (first generation) Bernedoodle, meaning that he’s 50% Poodle (his dad) and 50% Bernese Mountain Dog (his mom). Remi also seemed to get his size from his Bernese genetics, as he is pushing 80 pounds and still under a year old. As an F1, he has the classic wavy coat. He also has one furnishing gene, leading to the longer hair on the muzzle.
Remi has a phantom base coat color, but he carries one merle gene. This is what produces his unique mottling and graying of random areas of his coat. Since he does carry the merle gene, we are proactive to make sure we don’t breed Remi with another dog that carries a merle allele. This is because a dog with two copies of the merle gene is at a high risk for blindness, deafness, and other health issues.
Remi has completed his genetic screening, along with his Pennhip and OFA elbow prelim screening. Like many Bernedoodles - and Bernese Mountain Dogs - Remi does carry the DM allele along with the Improper Coat (IC) gene. Since DM is a recessive disorder, we will not pair Remi with a female Bernedoodle mama who also carries the DM allele. Outside of that, Remi is free from carrying any other genetic disorders that are concerning for Bernedoodles. Remi passed both his Pennhip and OFA elbow prelim. In the coming months, he will complete his OFA eye certification along with his OFA cardiac screening. Again, this is because we want to do all that we can to prioritize health in the Bernedoodle and Goldendoodle puppies that we raise, because that is a priority as the top Bernedoodle breeder in Oregon.
The plan is for Remi to sire both Bernedoodles and Golden Mountain Doodles for us. If both dogs pass their health clearances, Remi’s first litter will be this winter with Emmy. The Remi x Emmy litter will be standard F1b Bernedoodles around 60-70 lbs. We’re expecting curly and wavy Tri-color and Merle Tri-color coats on this litter, and we’re excited about their temperaments and sociability.
The Happy Bernedoodle Stud Muffin
As we discussed earlier, Remi has a great balance of being both highly sociable while also relaxed. Remi has been exposed to many other dogs of varying ages, and is social, playful, and confident with them. While it may be because he’s an 80 pound Bernedoodle stud and the largest dog in the room most of the time, that doesn’t explain all of it.
He’s also great with people! Remi loves people. Even with his size, we trust our younger kids around him. He’s largely specially aware, and is conscious of his size, although he can be slightly uncoordinated at points due to his size. Remi’s playful Bernedoodle stud spirit is a light to both the people and dogs that he comes across, and we are over the moon that we’ll be able to have him as a part of our program into the future.
Once Remi passes his health-testing, he will be available as a Bernedoodle stud for stud service with approved breeders. If you’re interested, then please reach out to see if he might be a good fit for your dam.
We are excited with the road ahead with Remi as our Bernedoodle stud, and look forward to the beautiful and confident Bernedoodles and Golden Mountain Doodles that he will sire.
