Luna’s Starry Night Goldendoodle Puppies are Shining

We had another beautiful arrival last week; Luna delivered 8 wonderful F1 Teddy Bear Goldendoodle puppies throughout the night. Luna and her Goldendoodle puppies have all done beautifully this week. She delivered them right around her due date, so we were excitedly expecting this wonderful litter of standard Goldendoodles. Her first puppy came around 1am and her last puppy was around 5am. They were all smooth deliveries; all of the Goldendoodle puppies were fully developed and easily joined the outside world. Luna’s maternal instincts blossomed fabulously, as she embraced motherhood with her litter. She is attentive to the puppies needs, and has done a great job patiently feeding them, along with cleaning them as they need it. Luna spends the majority of her day with her Goldendoodle puppies in the whelping box, and is careful and self-aware around them. It’s like she intuitively knows that these puppies are both fragile and dependent.

This litter of Goldendoodle puppies is made up of 5 females and 3 males, and we’re titling this litter as Luna’s “Starry Night We decided to name her Goldendoodle litter after constellations because Luna’s name is celestial (Luna means “moon”) and she gave birth throughout the night. The three boys are Leo (Yellow collar), Crux (Purple collar), and Orion (Green collar). The 5 girls are Carina (Orange collar), Virgo (Pink collar), Gemini (Blue collar), Ursa (Peach collar), and Cassiopeia (Grey collar) - we’re going to call her “Cassie” for short! Leo was the first Goldendoodle puppy born, and he was our second largest at 14.65 ounces. Cassie was the last puppy born, and she was our smallest at 11.8 ounces.

One of our main concerns with a new litter during the first week is that all of the puppies are successfully feeding and gaining weight; hopefully more than an ounce a day. If any puppy isn’t meeting these hopes - especially the smaller puppies - we give them some focused attention to help them get caught up to speed with the rest of the Goldendoodle litter. This Goldendoodle litter have been rockstars!

All of them are feeding well, and have gained more than an ounce a day. We’re so thankful for this great news, and are praying that they will continue to flourish and grow. We still pay a little more attention to our three smallest puppies - Cassie, Carina, and Gemini - to make sure they’re still feeding and not being bullied by their littermates. Feeding time can really turn into a feeding frenzy, which favors the larger Goldendoodle puppies, who can push their siblings out of the way. So we will make sure that our three little Goldendoodle ladies get choice position, and are getting the food that they need.

The whole goldendoodle litter looks remarkably similar; light cream coats with little black noses. You can see differences in the coats though, where some are wavy and others are straight. It will be interesting to watch them develop, and to see their individual personalities begin to distinguish individual goldendoodle puppies from the rest of the litter.

Here’s something interesting; Luna’s litter is catching up to Rosie’s litter in size and weight even though Rosie’s mini goldendoodle puppies are a week older than Lunas standard goldendoodle puppies. This isn’t really a surprise, since again one of the litters is standard goldendoodles and the other is mini goldendoodles. However, it’s still pretty wild to see this happen!

We will continue with early neurological stimulation and early scent introduction for another week with Luna’s litter. This is to help nurture neurological development in the goldendoodle puppies, and to help them begin to familiarize them with the world. The puppies are crawling around at this point, and still have their eyes closed. They should begin to open their eyes and become more mobile over the next week.
