A Bernedoodle in Oregon named after a Park in California

Yosemite - aka “Yose” - is a quirky, high spirited F1 Bernedoodle, who is also a future Oregon Bernedoodle mom for High Desert Family Doodles.

While she was born in Ohio, and resides with a guardian home here in Central Oregon, she has done her fair share of traveling. She’s spent some time around Tahoe during the winter. She fell in love with the snow, revealing her matriarchal Bernese Mountain dog roots as a Bernedoodle puppy.

Another fun fact is that she’s also named after California’s Yosemite National Park. Her guardian’s family has the tradition of naming their dogs after beloved locations, and Yosemite is close to his heart.

She spends a lot of her time palling around with her Australian Shepherd roomie Goose, where they enjoy chewing sticks, attempting to befriend anyone they come across, and exploring some nooks and crannies of Oregon’s high desert. Bernedoodle Yose also enjoys spending time with her Bernedoodle sister Belle, and many of the other High Desert Family Doodles around her.

Yosemite is the other Bernedoodle puppy sister, along with Belle the Bernedoodle, that joined us from Ohio from Berns and Doodles. They’ve been a great resource and a helpful, encouraging voice in our journey with Goldendoodles and Bernedoodles, so we enjoyed getting to have a couple of her puppies as part of our program. Yosemite and Belle have been kindred puppy spirits, and it’s been fun to watch them play and grow together.

Yosemite has a very similar genetic makeup as Belle.

Since they both came from the same Bernedoodle litter with genetically clear parents - her mom is a Bernese Mountain Dog and her dad is a poodle - both Yosemite and Belle were cleared by parentage of carrying any problematic Bernedoodle alleles that they could pass onto their Bernedoodle puppies. Nonetheless, we want to solidify that, so we did a Canine Health Check genetic panel on Yose to confirm this, which we were able to confirm!

Yose is cleared of any problematic Bernedoodle alleles - especially the dreaded DM - which helped us breath a sigh of relief. As an F1 Bernedoodle, Yosemite has a wavy coat (+/- curl) and carries the flat-coated allele (F/IC). This allele determines whether a Bernedoodle - or any doodle for that matter - is bearded or not. For instance, imagine what a Bernese Mountain Dog’s muzzle looks like - short, sleek hair - and compare that to what the Bernedoodle muzzles of Belle and Yosemite look like above. A Bernese would be considered “unfurnished” or have a “flat-coat”, while the Bernedoodles Belle and Yose are “furnished.

This gene also largely and anecdotally corresponds to the shedding level of a dog. I say “largely” because a furnished or bearded dog sheds dramatically less than a flat-coated dog, although they do require grooming. However, I also say “anecdotally” because some of our Goldendoodles and Bernedoodles that carry the IC gene shed less than some of our other doodles that are F/F.

Like Belle, Yose is also tri-colored (kyky atat) and also has one parti allele (ssp). Compared to Belle, Yose has more brown and black in her coat, while Belle has more white. One particular coat difference is that Yose’s muzzle is assymetrically brown and black, while Belle has a distinctly while muzzle.

Yose also has a higher energy level than Belle. This might have something to do with trying to keep up with an Australian Shepherd throughout the day. Her friend Goose almost always outlasts her, but she’s acclimated to a higher energy threshold than Bell. Regardless, Yose has a strong spirit, and is a confident Bernedoodle who enjoys the company of both dogs and people.

Not only has Yose passed her genetic screening, but she has also passed her Pennhip and OFA hip/elbow screening. She only needs her OFA eye CERF and OFA Cardiac screening before she is cleared to be a Bernedoodle mom for us. This will happen at some point during the summer of 2022.

Her first planned litter will most like be in the Fall/Winter of 2022. We will either pair her with our F1 Bernedoodle stud Remi for F2 standard Bernedoodle puppies, or with our AKC poodle stud Brownie, for F1b Medium Bernedoodle puppies. There will be a few factors that goes into this, especially as we look to coordinate and synchronize her breeding with Belle’s breeding. Like Belle, she might become the mom of some Golden Mountain Doodle litters down the road if we feel led in that direction.

Yose is just a tremendous spirit; we love her playfulness and confidence. She is in the adolescent puppy phase, so she’s working on managing her energy in a way that helps her mature into a responsible and friendly dog, one whom people and other dogs love to play with.

We are grateful for Yose. She has a fun spirit, and is an enthusiast on so many different fronts. It matches the ethos of Bend and Central Oregon. We are also deeply thankful for her ability to live close to us with a caring guardian home. This gives us a great opportunity to love on the Bernedoodles and Goldendoodles in our program, while also allowing them to be in their own loving homes in which they get attention and love.

Dogs, like pretty much anything beautiful and alive - thrive and flourish with love. While structure is a valuable part of life that helps strengthen spirits and wills, love is the great life-giver which helps all things live into their best version. We believe it’s imperative that our Goldendoodles and Bernedoodles are in loving homes which offer both structure and affection. in light of that, we are grateful for our Oregon guardian families who have risen to the call. If you are interested in being a guardian for one of our Oregon Bernedoodles or Goldendoodles, then reach out - we’d love to hear from you!

We look forward to what the future has for Yose and the rest of our pack; it’s only getting brighter!

Warmly,

Erin and Jay
