Here at High Desert Family Doodles, we stand out amongst Bernedoodle breeders in the Pacific Northwest. There is no breed club for Bernedoodles at this time, so it’s a bit of the Wild West. Many people have began to breed merle Bernedoodles, but do not bother with health testing their doodles, or they don’t have a set standard regarding what is responsible health-testing or not.

Our Merle Bernedoodle lines, beginning with our Merle Bernedoodle stud Remi, are health-tested to the standards that have been set up by the Goldendoodle Association of North America; the consummate breed club for Goldendoodles. As merle Bernedoodle breeders for Tacoma Washington, we believe its important to maintain this standard in order provide our merle Bernedoodles with the best chances of flourishing down the road, especially around the Puget Sound.

One of the top genetic issues for Bernese Mountain Dogs - and also for Bernedoodles - is Degenerative Myelopathy. It’s a debilitating disease, so we take particular attention to genetically test our Bernedoodles to see if they are at risk for this allele, and breed our dogs in a way that none of the merle Bernedoodle puppies will have a chance to inherit two alleles.

When breeding merle Bernedoodles, it is imperative to avoid breeding two merles together, because a “double merle” Bernedoodle has dramatically higher chances of developing blindness and deafness, among other health issues. Thus, we screen for merle - even in Bernedoodles that don’t appear to possess that trait - because there are ”hidden merle” bernedoodles too.

There are many unknowns with any puppy, so we do what we can to help provide Tacoma Washington with the healthiest merle Bernedoodles.

High Desert Family Doodles is located in the beautiful high desert of Central Oregon, which makes us just a beautiful day trip away from Tacoma, Washington. Out here in the desert, we are far enough out to let our dogs experience the openness of space. However, we are also close enough for our dogs to experience strong socialization practices, which would help both them - and their merle bernedoodle puppies - flourish in the more populated area of Tacoma, while also visiting Point Defiance Park.

Our merle bernedoodle puppies - along with the rest of our puppies - go through our curriculum - which follows both the Puppy Culture and BAB breeder programming. This starts at the beginning, where we begin with early scent exposure and early neurological stimulation (ENS). We continue to expose our merle bernedoodle puppies to new situations, sensations, sounds, and people to help them grow into confident and pleasurable adult merle bernedoodles. In the later part of their stay with us, the puppies will work on house-training, along with early crate exposure. This is to help them transition into your house in Tacoma, as they seek to explore and understand their new world, and potentially visit Wright Park.
