Goldendoodles are Healthier
Goldendoodles Have Less Cancer than Parent Breeds
Nationwide - the nation’s largest pet insurer - recently released some data indicating that Goldendoodles have a much lower cancer occurrence than their two parent breeds. Goldendoodles also seem to have a much lower cancer occurrence than the average dog.
One of the greatest concerns with new owners of Goldendoodle and Bernedoodle puppies is their health. The owners deeply want to see their puppies thrive, and see them thrive as adult Goldendoodles into their teens. One thing many dog owners are concerned about is the risk of their puppies developing cancer as they age. We have personally journeyed through this shadow valley with one of our early rescue puppies. It was raw and tough as we watched our beloved Zion hurt and struggle, and the sickness ended up taking him away from us.
Another reason for Goldendoodles
This can be one of the tougher things about having a Golden Retriever, Bernese Mountain Dog, or Poodle. All three of these breeds have a higher occurrence of cancer than average. This can cause many people to avoid these breeds all together; they don’t want to take the heightened risk of pain and heartbreak for both puppy and person.
Nationwide reported that Goldendoodles and Labradoodles have a much lower chance of an insurance claim for cancer on their policy, in comparison to Poodles, Golden Retrievers, and Labradors. Take a look at this data:
Goldendoodles preform much better than the average dog.
In the article, they say that “Golden Retrievers and Standard Poodles, which are the parent breeds of Goldendoodles, are 3.8 times more likely to have a claim for cancer than Goldendoodles.”
On top of that, Goldendoodles are almost half as likely to have a cancer claim made (47%) than the average dog.
Plus, Labradoodles have some similar stat lines to Goldendoodles (although they aren’t as strong).
Obviously this is a far cry from proving something that’s water-tight. The differences of reported claims could be due to something besides their breed differences between Goldendoodles and Poodles/Golden Retrievers. However, it seems like the breed differences play a pretty important role to me, and would draw me towards a Goldendoodle puppy.
Bernedoodles are likely to have similar results
This is probably be an example of hybrid vigor, where a hybrid dog (Golden Retriever + Poodle = Goldendoodle) has an improved health profile when compared to their parent breeds. In light of this, I would imagine that similar health benefits would be seen in Bernedoodles in comparison to Poodles and BMD’s (especially since BMD’s are known for being pretty short-lived).
Going with a Goldendoodle Puppy could reduce pain & heartache later
Putting on my dog owner hat, it makes me feel good that Goldendoodles - and other poodle hybrids - have a lower chance of cancer, because that means a lower chance of puppy pain. That is a huge deal to me, and I think is another reason why someone should consider a Goldendoodle or Bernedoodle. While we may be a little biased - although we do have poodles and a Golden Retriever - it continues to solidify Goldendoodles and Bernedoodles as the perfect breeds of family dogs.
